Crowns

crownA crown is a porcelain restoration that completely covers the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies   at and above the gum line. Crowns areused when we need to rebuild broken or  decayed teeth, strengthen teeth, or improve the cosmetic appearance of a tooth.

The dentist will prepare the tooth to the ideal shape for the crown. This will involve removing most of the outer surface, and leaving a strong inner core. The amount of the tooth removed will be the same as the thickness of the crown. Once the tooth is shaped, the dentist will take an impression (mould) of the prepared tooth, one of the opposite jaw and possibly another to mark the way you bite your teeth together. The impressions will then be given to the dental technician, along with an appropriate shade and other information needed for the crown to be made. You will be provided with a temporary crown while we wait for the laboratory to prepare the permanent one. When you return for your second visit, the temporary crown is removed and we try the crown in. We then check the colour and fit of the crown, ensure that you are happy with the result and permanently cement the crown to your tooth.
